Prior to European settlement, many Native American tribes hunted on the future lands of Haskell County. These included the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Quapaw and Osage Indians. Haskell County took its name from a member of the Oklahoma Constitutional Convention and the first governor of Oklahoma, Charles N. Haskell.
The county was created the same year that Oklahoma achieved statehood: 1907. The city of Stigler was named in honor of Joseph S. Stigler, a local developer who helped build up the area even before the state or county had officially been established. After the county was created, the city of Stigler managed to defeat the towns of Keota and Whitefield in a competition to be named the county seat. Coal mining brought jobs and the railroads to Haskell County in the early 20th century, but it was agriculture that drove the local economy.

Water is the primary attraction in and around Haskell County. Robert S. Kerr Lake and Lake Eufaula offer extensive opportunities for camping, hiking, hunting, boating and fishing. Robert S. Kerr Lake is home to channel catfish, flathead catfish, white crappie, walleye and various species of sunfish. Lake Eufaula, on the other hand, provides black crappie, blue catfish, yellow perch, bream and more. Both lakes are home to plenty of largemouth and striped bass.
Along the northern edge of Haskell County, you will find Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge. Here, you can catch sight of animals as unique as the bald eagle and as elusive as the bobcat. Ducks and geese come here by the thousands every year, making for excellent hunting during
designated seasons.
Stigler is home to its own golf course, the Brier Creek Golf Course. This hilly collection of 18 holes features 2 small lakes and beautifully maintained greens.
